Cake Pop Stick Sizes Explained: 150mm or 190mm?
If you've ever bought cake pop sticks and ended up with ones that are too short to hold the pop, or too long for the bag you're using, you'll know the size question matters more than it first looks. Here's a clear breakdown of the sizes most cake pop bakers actually use — and how to choose between them.
The Short Answer
The two main cake pop stick sizes are 150mm × 4.5mm (6 inch) and 190mm × 4.5mm (7.5 inch).
- 150mm — the industry-standard size for full-size cake pops. The default choice.
- 190mm — the premium choice for larger, taller or design-focused pops where extra stick length helps presentation.
Smaller sizes (114mm and 89mm) are available for mini cake pops and tasting samples respectively, but they're not the main commercial sizes.
That's the quick answer. If you want to understand why, read on.
Why Size Matters for Cake Pops
A cake pop stick has three jobs:
- Hold the cake ball securely — the stick needs to be inserted deep enough into the cake that it won't slip out when dipped in chocolate or candy coating.
- Give the person eating it somewhere to hold — the stick should extend below the ball far enough for a comfortable grip.
- Fit your packaging — cake pop bags, display cases and gift boxes all have height limits.
Too short and the stick disappears into the cake ball with no grip showing. Too long and it won't fit your bags. The right size balances all three jobs — and for the vast majority of cake pops, that means 150mm or 190mm.
150mm × 4.5mm (6 inch) — The Standard Cake Pop Stick
This is the industry-standard cake pop stick — the size most tutorials, recipe books and brands reference, and one of the best-selling sticks in the Yolli range. The 6-inch length gives you:
- About 50mm of stick inserted into a standard cake ball (the recommended depth)
- About 100mm of stick showing below the ball for a comfortable grip
- Fit with standard cake pop bags (typically 6.5" tall or larger)
The 4.5mm diameter is thick enough to hold a fully dipped cake ball (typically 30–40g) without bending when you tap off excess chocolate. This is the size to choose if you're not sure which to start with.

190mm × 4.5mm (7.5 inch) — Premium and Display Cake Pops
The 190mm size is the second go-to for cake pop bakers, particularly those running boutique cake pop businesses, taking premium catering bookings, or creating cake pops where presentation matters as much as taste. Use this size when:
- You're selling cake pops as part of a premium dessert table or event styling
- You're creating tall, design-focused pops with decorative bows or banners
- You're packaging in tall cellophane bags or display tubes
- You want the stick to be a feature of the finished pop, not just a handle
Same 4.5mm diameter as the standard 150mm — strong enough for a fully dipped cake ball without flex. The extra 40mm of stick gives the finished pop a more striking, professional silhouette.
If you're running a cake pop business and only buying one size, many bakers tell us 190mm is their go-to over 150mm for the more premium look.

114mm × 4mm (4.5 inch) — Mini Cake Pops Only
The 114mm size is short — too short for a normal cake pop. It's only the right choice for mini cake pops or canapé-style dessert sticks. Use this size when:
- You're making canapé-style cake pops for events or weddings (smaller than half the size of a standard pop)
- You want to fit a high count of mini pops per platter
- You're targeting children's parties where smaller portions make sense
- You're packaging in cellophane cones or short bags
Not suitable for full-size cake pops — there's not enough stick below the ball for a proper grip.

89mm × 4mm (3.5 inch) — Pop Bites and Samples
The smallest size in our regular range. The 89mm stick is for very small cake pop bites — typically just the size of a large grape — or for tasting samples at trade shows and food fairs. Use this when:
- You're making tasting samples to give out at events
- Your cake balls are 20g or smaller
- You need to fit a high count of pops into a small display
Not recommended for full-size or mini cake pops — the stick is too short to give a proper grip.

What About Even Larger Sizes?
Yolli stocks wooden sticks up to 610mm (24 inches), but anything above 190mm moves out of cake pop territory and into giant or display lollipop territory:
- 230mm and 280mm — extra-large lollipops, showpieces, fairground-style display pops
- 610mm — giant novelty and display lollipops, themed bakery centrepieces
If you need a sturdier 190mm for very heavy chocolate-dipped pops, the 190mm × 6mm "thick" version is available — same length, extra diameter for heavier loads.

Wood, Paper or Plastic?
Most cake pop bakers use wooden sticks because they look natural, hold heavy dipped pops without bending, and give a traditional bakery feel. If you're producing cake pops in volume on a forming machine, paper sticks may suit better — but for hand-made cake pops, wooden is the default for a reason.

Don't Forget the Bags
Once you've picked your stick size, you'll need bags to package the finished pops — both for protection and presentation. Standard cake pops fit best in:
- Cake Pop Bags — clear polypropylene bags sized specifically for finished cake pops, ready to seal with twist ties or ribbon.
- Clear Display Bags — food-grade display bags in a range of sizes, ideal if you need a taller bag for 190mm sticks or want flexibility across different pop sizes.
- Custom Printed Bags — your branding, ingredients or logo printed straight onto the bag. Best for premium cake pop businesses selling to retailers, caterers or as branded gifts.
If you're going for the 190mm premium look, make sure your bag is tall enough — a standard 6.5" cake pop bag won't fit a 7.5" stick comfortably.
